Step Three, LDD Moths Across the City & July City Council

Dear Neighbours,

The City of Toronto is now in Step Three of the province’s Roadmap to Reopen plan. Step Three permits Toronto residents to gather indoors, eat indoors at bars and restaurants and resume going to gyms and recreation centres. Please review the City’s COVID-19 Reopening Guide for Toronto Residents for a list of activities that are permitted in Step Three.

July’s City Council meeting tackled a few big items including renaming Dundas Street, approving SafeTO, a community safety and well-being plan and the TransformTO Net Zero Building strategy. Items closer home include the request I put forward for extra supports to address the European Gypsy (LDD) Moth infestation in the Seven Oaks Community.

I presented this request at this month’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting where it was amended to expand supports across the City for communities experiencing impacts by the LDD moth infestations. This request was successfully adopted at last week’s City Council meeting, where City Staff have been asked to provide additional supports including providing residents with information as well as holding public meetings for impacted communities.

For several years now, residents have contacted my office to report concerns regarding LDD Moth infestations throughout their community, with a significant number of inquiries from the Seven Oaks area. LDD Moths consume the regeneration tissues of trees causing them to expire. With the alarming growth of LDD Moths in the community, it is time for the City to take further action to protect the natural canopy and community members.

City staff is continuing to ask residents to report sightings of LDD moths/caterpillars via the city’s online reporting tool available at www.toronto.ca/gypsymoth or by calling 311. Homeowners can drop a point on the interactive map where they are seeing the caterpillars and report the volume they are seeing.

Today, flags on official flagpoles at Toronto City Hall and Civic Centres will be flown at half-mast in respect for the 160 unmarked graves discovered near a former residential school on Penelakut Island in British Columbia and those that did not return from these schools. Each of these findings brings new trauma for the Indigenous community and all of Canada. The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line 24-hour line can be reached at 1-866-925-4419. The Toronto Zoo’s native species conservation breeding program for the endangered black-footed ferret has welcomed sixteen kits! Reminders for when booking your second dose: A “mixed mRNA model” – mixing Pfizer and Moderna for first and second dose – is approved by both the federal and provincial governments.The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are incredibly similar with near identical efficacy rates. Both vaccines have similar side effects. People are encouraged to get whichever vaccine is easiest or fastest for them to access.

Additionally, if you received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine you can choose to either receive a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, or an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) vaccine for your second dose. Both second-dose options are safe and provide strong protection against COVID-19 and will count as a completed series. More details are available here.

The City of Toronto is ready to enter Step Three of the Province’s Roadmap to Reopen on Friday, July 16, 2021 at 12:01am. Step Three of the Roadmap focuses on the resumption of additional indoor services with large numbers of people and restrictions in place. Full details on Step Three restrictions are available on the “Reopening” Ontario webpage. I continue to encourage residents to review the City’s COVID-19 Reopening Guide for Toronto Residents for the latest public health guidance, provincial regulations, and City bylaws.

The use of CCTV cameras is not intended to be a replacement for police officers but is an added tool to assist in enhancing public safety. Dear Neighbours,

Thank you for your efforts in keeping our community safe during these difficult times. Please review the City of Toronto’s COVID-19 Vaccines webpage, to inform yourself of the benefits of vaccination.

*NEW* Starting today, youth aged 12-17 across Ontario are eligible for accelerated second dose appointments – News Release.  As the province moves to Step Two of its Roadmap to Reopen, Ontario is accelerating second dose eligibility to all children and youth aged 12 to 17 to provide them with a strong level of protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and support a safe return to school in September. Eligible individuals can book an accelerated second dose appointment through the provincial booking system, directly through public health units and through participating pharmacies.

*NEW* More than fifty per cent of Toronto adults are now fully vaccinated – News Release. As of today, 77.5 per cent of adults have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and more than 50 per cent are fully vaccinated. In total, 1,404,614 Toronto residents are now fully vaccinated.

*NEW* More than 44,000 appointments available for City of Toronto immunization clinics this week – News Release. Everyone age 12 and older is eligible to book a first dose or an accelerated second dose. People with a scheduled second dose appointment later in the summer should reschedule for as soon as possible to ensure they are protecting themselves and the wider community against the Delta variant. 

*NEW* City opens eight Emergency Cooling Centres during Heat Warning – News Release. The eight Emergency Cooling Centres across the city will offer a publicly accessible, air-conditioned place to rest indoors and receive a drink. One of the eight cooling centres is located at the Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr, and will operate from 11 am to 7pm during Heat Warnings. This interactive map is available to help those who need to locate an Emergency Cooling Centre near them.

*NEW* Moderna 2nd dose bookings now available on www.scarbvaccine.ca! Scarborough Health Network is pleased to announced that eligible individuals can now book 2nd dose appointments for the Moderna vaccine at three of their community vaccine clinics through www.scarbvaccine.ca. To be eligible individuals must be 18 years or older and live, work or go to school in Scarborough AND received your 1st dose of Moderna at least 28 days ago OR 1st dose of Pfizer at least 21 days ago OR 1st dose of AstraZeneca at least 8 weeks ago.

*NEW* Scarborough Dash for Doses – 4 weeks this July, 3 stationary pit stops in Scarborough! These clinics will be vaccinating PFIZER 1st doses and 2nd doses to those 12+ who live/work/go to school in Scarborough (M1):

Where to get accurate COVID-19 information:

The City of Toronto is now in Step Two of the Province’s Roadmap to Reopen. In Step Two, additional restrictions put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 are being lifted. Small indoor gatherings of up to five people from different households are permitted and outdoor gathering limits increase to 25 people. I would like to encourage residents to review the City’s COVID-19 Reopening Guide for Toronto Residents for the latest public health guidance, provincial regulations, and City bylaws.
