I want to thank everyone for your efforts during these difficult times. Let us all remember that this will soon pass as we continue to keep each other safe. Our mental health is paramount, and it is important that we take care of ourselves and seek support if needed.

I cannot stress enough the serious situation at hand as COVID-19 cases in Toronto and across the province continue to rise. It is very important that we adhere to public health advice to practice physical distancing, wash hands as often as possible and to wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained. City of Toronto COVID-19 Case Update: (Data as of October 7, 2020): There has been an increase of 284 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. Through the pandemic City has seen a total of 21,586 cases of COVID-19, of these, 17,956 cases have recovered, an increase of 258 cases from the day before. There are 89 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 13 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,308 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

New commitment to battery-electric vehicle manufacturing in Ontario. Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, announced their commitment to Ford Motor Company of Canada’s investment in its Oakville Assembly Complex. This project, valued at $1.8 billion, will include federal and provincial contributions of $295 million each. This will help secure 5,400 well-paying middle-class jobs across Ford’s production workforce in Canada and grow our green economy, especially in Southern Ontario where thousands of Canadians are employed across the auto supply chain. A repurposed battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production plant for the Oakville Assembly Complex is in line with the Government of Canada’s commitment to sustainable growth. Electrification will allow us to position the innovative Canadian automotive industry as a global leader in BEV manufacturing. More information can be read in the news release.

Ontario supporting local festivals and events. Ontario is investing $9 million through the new Reconnect Festival and Event Program to support municipalities and event organizers during COVID-19. This funding will be used to maintain public safety requirements and allow people to reconnect with their communities through online, drive-through and other innovative experiences. Organizers will be developing creative programs such as virtual Remembrance Day events, reverse holiday parades with drive-by static floats, drive-in music concerts and movies, holiday tree lightings and New Year’s Eve displays that light-up iconic buildings. Economic impact of Toronto live music venues totals $850 million, providing 10,500 full time jobs. Today, Mayor John Tory and the Canadian Live Music Association, in partnership with Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area and Ontario Creates, released the results of a long-awaited Toronto venues study, Re:Venues: A Case and Path Forward for Toronto’s Live Music Industry. Among other findings, the study confirms that the total economic impact of Toronto live music venues is $850 million annually, providing the equivalent of 10,500 full-time jobs.

Conducted by Nordicity, the two-year study measured the economic and cultural impacts of Toronto’s live music venues, underscoring their importance to Toronto’s economy and highlighting the key role these establishments play in a thriving music ecosystem. The study also provides recommendations for supporting and protecting this vital sector and suggests actions for prioritizing live music as Toronto rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic. An update on the City’s Historic Red Oak Fundraising Campaign

The mighty, 250-year-old oak at 76 Coral Gable Dr. has stood watch as Toronto has grown under the shelter of its grand canopy. Last year, the City entered into an agreement to purchase the property and establish the space as a parkette to preserve and showcase our living history. However, completion of the sale is conditional on fundraising the sum of $430,000 by December 12, 2020. Upon achieving the target, the City is committed to contributing the funds necessary to complete the sale and create a wonderful parkette.

As of October 7, 2020, $170,000 has been committed to the campaign by donors, putting us at 39 per cent to target. It’s a good start, and there are ongoing conversations with potential major donors, but time is running out and more help is needed if we’re to reach the goal by the December 12 deadline.

Any gift to the oak is a gift to the people of Toronto, one that will last for centuries to come. This is not merely about protecting a tree. It is about preserving a piece of ourselves. To donate or for further information, please visit Toronto.ca/RedOak.

Markham Rd Ramp Southbound to 401 Westbound Collectors will be closed from Thursday October 15 to Monday October 19 due to an ongoing construction project. During this closure traffic will be detoured to the McCowan ON-ramp via D-11.

Youthlink’s YAC Presents: Virtual Paint Night Fundraiser. Youthlink’s YAC members present a virtual paint night fundraiser, raising donations for platforms within the black community. The Virtual Salmon Festival at Highland Creek. Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is celebrating the Salmon Festival at Highland Creek virtually this week! TRCA has created educational and engaging videos about salmon to watch from the comfort of your own home. These videos, along with other materials is available on their website here.

Community survey for Scarborough residents: Your experiences with the Toronto Police. Native Child and Family Services of Toronto has been operating as a family support agency in Toronto for over 30 years.  With recent events in mind, they would like to know more about the community’s experience with the Toronto Police.  This survey is only the first step in a multi step planned community consultation process and will help us shape the rest of our strategy to obtain even more feedback from you. Please take the survey here.

I cannot stress enough the serious situation at hand as COVID-19 cases in Toronto and across the province continue to rise. It is very important that we adhere to public health advice to practice physical distancing, wash hands as often as possible and to wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained. Thanksgiving weekend is fast approaching, I am stressing for everyone to be responsible when planning their Thanksgiving celebrations. The Medical Officer of Health urges people to not hold a big Thanksgiving dinners and to please limit celebrations to people living in the same household. For those that live alone, the safest option is to join with others virtually. These are vital decisions and actions we must take to fight the resurgence of COVID-19.

While you may feel small private gatherings may be harmless, it has been found that many areas in the City are seeing over 10% rate of positivity, reported by the Toronto Star. Parts of Scarborough are showing COVID-19 test positivity rates above 7% in areas around Morningside Heights, Kennedy and Eglington, and Ellesmere and Bellamy. These rates are much greater than the 1% desired manageable caseload or a 3% health crisis indication. Remember to stay safe and keep those around you safe.

Put your social bubbles or circles on hold. It is advised that everyone allow close contact only with people living in their own household and maintain two metres physically distanced from everyone else.

The Province has implemented new testing measures this week which include transitioning to pre-registered testing and expanding testing centres across the province. A list of Scarborough testing centres and preregistration information can be found HERE. Scarborough testing locations include: Birchmount Hospital (3030 Birchmount Rd.) Centenary Hospital (2867 Ellesmere Rd.) and *NEW* Scarborough General Hospital (3050 Lawrence Ave. E.)

Contact tracing is very important in recognizing community spread. Toronto Public Health encourages residents to download the COVID Alert app, which can help notify individuals who are exposed to COVID-19 in the community. City of Toronto businesses are also encouraged to display a new poster promoting the COVID-19 Alert app to help mitigate the spread of infections.

City of Toronto COVID-19 Case Update (Data as of October 5, 2020): There has been an increase of 217 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. Through the pandemic City has seen a total of 21,142 cases of COVID-19, of these, 17,462 cases have recovered, an increase of 219 cases from the day before. There are 83 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 9 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,307 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 2 deaths from the day before. These totals include 73 cases, 78 deaths and 8 hospitalizations due to data cleaning. Ontario surpasses four million COVID-19 tests since the beginning of the pandemic and continues to lead the country in both the number of tests completed and daily testing capacity. To ensure the province’s health care system is prepared for the second wave of COVID-19, the government will add more testing locations to improve access and reduce wait times, as well as increase processing capacity within the provincial laboratory network. Toronto’s 2020-2021 winter plan for people experiencing homelessness includes more spaces and enhanced street outreach. Homelessness is an extremely complex issue and the City of Toronto continues to experience significant demand for emergency shelter. To ensure safe and welcoming places for people who need them during the coming winter weather, the City is providing details about the 2020-2021 winter service plan.

The winter plan will provide approximately 560 new spaces between November and April through a combination of shelter beds, hotel programs and supportive housing units. This compares to 485 spaces offered through last year’s winter services plan.  Additional space will also be activated at Warming Centres during Extreme Cold Weather Alerts.

This will be the fifth consecutive year that the City has increased the number of spaces available throughout the winter season. Spaces will be made available through the following:

1. 100, 24-hour respite site spaces at the CNE, Better Living Centre
2. 150 beds in hotel programs
3. 90 hotel beds as a replacement for the Out of the Cold program

REMINDER: Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough: FREE Winter Clothing Drive. The Youth Department at Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough is preparing a Winter Clothing Drive for the residents at Lido Motel at 4674 Kingston Road on TOMORROW October 7, 2020 from 3PM to 6PM.

They are asking for donations of gently used clothing and shoes. Winter jackets and sweaters are mostly needed. Items can be dropped off at 100 Galloway Rd. If you require items to be picked up, please email efranklyn@esbgc.ca to make arrangements. Thank you in advance.

Today October 5^th is World Teachers’ Day! Today we honour all teachers who educate, guide and mentor students. The City of Toronto recognizes the contributions of our teachers, especially teachers adapting to various teaching methods during this pandemic. Their dedication and hard work help to enrich the lives of their students on a daily basis.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19

Social circles or bubbles are to be paused. It is advised that everyone allow close contact only with people living in their own household and maintain two metres physically distanced from everyone else.

As the virus continues to circulate in the community, it is vital that we are all reminded to adhere to Toronto Public Heath’s advice to practise physical distancing, wash hands often and wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Toronto Public Health also encourages residents to download the COVID Alert app, which can help notify individuals who are exposed to COVID-19 in the community. 

Data as of October 4, 2020: There has been an increase of 301 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. Through the pandemic City has seen a total of 20,941 cases of COVID-19, of these, 17,246 cases have recovered, an increase of 222 cases from the day before. There are 77 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 8 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,305 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 3 deaths from the day before. These totals include 73 cases, 78 deaths and 8 hospitalizations due to data cleaning. Scarborough Health Network COVID-19 Update: New Assessment Centre & Appointment-Based Testing

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise and drive demand for COVID-19 testing, Scarborough Health Network is opening a third assessment centre at their General Hospital located at 3050 Lawrence Ave E.

Appointment-based testing came into effect TODAY, October 5^th. This will provide certainty to patients as to when they can receive a test during the cold winter months and allow assessment centres to conduct enhanced screening. Ontario releases $35 million to hire more staff, improve remote learning in targeted communities

Today, the Ontario government announced the allocation of $35 million to provide additional immediate school board supports in the communities of Peel, Ottawa, Toronto and York Region to enhance public health measures and protection strategies as they confront higher rates of transmission in their communities.

This funding is part of the government’s robust and comprehensive $1.3 billion plan to safely reopen classrooms across the province, including additional resources to help school boards hire more staff, keep class sizes low, and enhance cleaning in schools. City of Toronto update on COVID-19

Social circles or bubbles are to be paused. It is advised that everyone allow close contact only with people living in their own household and maintain two metres physically distanced from everyone else.

As the virus continues to circulate in the community, it is vital that we are all reminded to adhere to Toronto Public Heath’s advice to practise physical distancing, wash hands often and wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Toronto Public Health also encourages residents to download the COVID Alert app, which can help notify individuals who are exposed to COVID-19 in the community. 

Data as of October 1, 2020: There has been an increase of 311 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. Through the pandemic City has seen a total of 20,180 cases of COVID-19, of these, 16,672 cases have recovered, an increase of 236 cases from the day before. There are 72 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 3 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,262 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 2 deaths from the day before. These totals include 73 cases, 78 deaths and 8 hospitalizations due to data cleaning. Today’s Provincial announcement on new COVID-19 public health and testing measures

In response to the second wave of COVID-19 and in preparation for the cold winter months, the Ontario government is tightening public health measures and taking action to reduce testing turnaround times while prioritizing those who are at the greatest risk.

New Measures for Testing:

• Transitioning to appointment-based testing at Ontario assessment centres beginning Tuesday, October 6, 2020;
• Beginning Sunday, October 4, 2020, assessment centres will discontinue walk-in testing services;
• Continue mobile and pop-up testing centres;
• Expanding the number of pharmacies that can provide COVID-19 tests; and
• Implementing updated testing guidance for children to help parents determine when it is most appropriate to seek a test for COVID-19.

The following measures come into effect TOMORROW. October 3, 2020 at 12:01am.

New PROVINCE-WIDE Public Health Measures:

• Mandating the use of face coverings in all public indoor settings across the province, such as businesses, facilities, and workplaces.

New Public Heath Measures targeted to TORONTO, OTTAWA, and PEEL:

• Setting an indoor capacity limit to restrict occupancy at restaurants, bars and other food and drink establishments (including nightclubs) to the number of patrons who can maintain a physical distance of at least two metres from every other patron, to a maximum of 100 patrons, permitting no more than six patrons per table, requiring operators to ensure patrons lining up or congregating outside of their establishment maintain physical distancing, and mandating that the name and contact information for each patron be collected;
• Restricting group exercise classes at gyms and other fitness settings to 10 individuals, as well as restricting the total number of people allowed at these facilities to a maximum of 50; and
• Setting a limit on the number of people allowed at meeting and event facilities, including banquet halls, to six people per table and 50 people per facility.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health recommends the Province take immediate action to stop the further spread of COVID-19

The number of COVID-19 cases in Toronto continues to increase, with the city at risk of experiencing exponential growth of COVID-19 infections. The seven-day moving average of COVID-19 cases, starting on September 1, was 40. On September 17, it was 84, and on September 29, it was 236 – an almost six-fold increase.

Dr. de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, has outlined concerns of immediate health risks to the public if quick and decisive action is not taken, in a letter to Dr. David Williams, Province of Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. The following public health measure recommendations, then, were made to the Province today:

1. Restaurants and Bars: Prohibiting indoor dining. The City has explored two alternatives to this restriction, such as requiring individuals to only dine in with members of their household, or restricting indoor dining in areas of Toronto where case counts are highest. Dr. de Villa, however, does not believe that such measures will be either enforceable or effective.
2. General Public: Individuals to only leave their homes for essential trips. Drawing on experience from other jurisdictions, as well as the City’s own successful experience in controlling transmission during the first wave of COVID-19, Dr. de Villa recommends that people only leave their homes for essential activities, such as work, education, exercise and fitness, healthcare appointments and the purchase of food. Up to two individuals from outside a household would be permitted to provide social support if an individual lives alone.
3. Recreation, Sports and Gyms: All indoor group classes in gyms and indoor sports team activities to be discontinued.
4. Managing Public Health Measures in Large Venues: Require a plan be submitted to Toronto Public Health demonstrating how these venues will comply with public health measures, such as seating that ensures physical distancing and a method to collect individual contact information. Dr. de Villa has concerns about exposures and outbreaks in large venues, some of which can have a capacity of more than 100. She also expressed concerns about the current regulations that allow for 30 per cent capacity in these venues.

Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough: FREE Winter Clothing Drive

The Youth Department at Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough is preparing a Winter Clothing Drive for the residents at Lido Motel at 4674 Kingston Road on Wednesday October 7, 2020 from 3PM to 6PM.

They are asking for donations of gently used clothing and shoes. Winter jackets and sweaters are mostly needed. Items can be dropped off at 100 Galloway Rd. If you require items to be picked up, please email efranklyn@esbgc.ca to make arrangements. Thank you in advance.

I want to thank everyone for your efforts during these difficult times. It is very important that we all follow the mandatory physical distancing bylaw and the mandatory mask or face covering bylaw! Please take a moment to complete my COVID-19 Information Survey.

October is Islamic Heritage Month. During this month we recognize the significant contributions and achievements of Muslim Canadians and communities throughout the world. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is most likely to be found in women aged 50 to 69 years of age. People are encouraged to see their doctor as soon as possible if they have any physical symptoms. An early diagnosis of the disease can lead to a positive outcome.

Today, October 1^st, we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon or Lantern Festival, which marks when the moon is at its brightest. I would like to extend my well wishes to the many communities who are celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with their loved ones today.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

Data as of September 30, 2020: Through the pandemic City of the Toronto has seen a total of 19,837 cases of COVID-19, an increase of 280 cases from the day before. Of these, 16,509 cases have recovered, an increase of 186 cases from the day before. There are 75 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 13 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,183 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 1 case from the day before. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

As the virus continues to circulate in the community, it is vital that we are all reminded to adhere to Toronto Public Heath’s advice to practise physical distancing, stay within their social bubble of no more than 10 people, wash hands often and wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Toronto Public Health also encourages residents to download the COVID Alert app, which can help notify individuals who are exposed to COVID-19 in the community. 

Toronto City Council votes unanimously to strengthen bylaws to prevent continued COVID-19 resurgence

Yesterday, Toronto City Council voted unanimously in favour of stronger measures to protect residents from COVID-19 and slow the ongoing resurgence of the virus in the community. The measures adopted were recommended by Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa and are supported by data collected by Toronto Public Health.

Following today’s Council vote, next Thursday, October 8, several new temporary bylaw amendments will come into force. To prevent COVID-19 activity and outbreaks in establishments serving food and drinks, these businesses will be required to:

City of Toronto launches Vision Zero Be Safe campaign to caution road users to stay alert and obey the rules of the road

The City of Toronto launched a city-wide public education campaign today to remind all road users – pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers – to exercise caution, stay alert and obey the rules of the road as traffic volumes continue to rise and as many students have now returned to school.

The Be Safe campaign, which advances the education component of the City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan, features a series of messages that promote awareness of the rules of the road, especially as they relate to cycling infrastructure, and remind residents to take extra safety precautions. Feedback on the licensing of payday loan establishments in Toronto

As directed by Council, the City is preparing an update on the licensing of Payday Loan Establishments in Toronto. A report is expected at the General Government and Licensing Committee by the end of 2020.  As part of this update, staff are seeking feedback on:

Staff are also seeking to understand the financial effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Toronto residents, and their ability to access low-cost financial loans or products. Stakeholders and members of the public can submit feedback on these issues to MLSFeedback@toronto.ca. The deadline for submissions is October 16, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. We will appreciate your help in sharing this information with interested residents or businesses. City of Toronto awarded Champion of Trees by the Arbor Day Foundation

Today, Mayor John Tory accepted the Champion of Trees Award on behalf of the City of Toronto. The award, presented by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizes the City for exemplary leadership in developing and implementing new policies and practices for tree planting and care, natural area stewardship and arboriculture. The award was presented to City Council members during its meeting today. More information can be read in the news release.

To this date, there have been 1,179 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

As the virus continues to circulate in the community, it is vital that we are all reminded to adhere to Toronto Public Heath’s advice to practise physical distancing, stay within their social bubble of no more than 10 people, wash hands often and wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Toronto Public Health also encourages residents to download the COVID Alert app, which can help notify individuals who are exposed to COVID-19 in the community. 

Ontario providing over half a billion dollars to protect vulnerable seniors against Second Wave of COVID-19

The Ontario government is investing close to $540 million to protect residents, caregivers, and staff in long-term care homes from future surges and waves of COVID-19. The funding is part of the province’s COVID-19 fall preparedness plan, Keeping Ontarians Safe: Preparing for Future Waves of COVID-19. More information can be read in the news release.

City of Toronto issues Open Door program call for application to support building new affordable rental housing

The City of Toronto has released the 2020 Call for Applications for the Open Door program. The program provides an opportunity for private, co-op and non-profit affordable housing organizations to apply for support from the City to create affordable rental housing for low- and moderate-income households in Toronto.

The 2020 Open Door application is similar to previous years, but there are changes aimed at providing greater affordable housing benefits. These changes include:

• The minimum affordability period of 40 years
• A minimum of 50 per cent of the total buildable gross floor area must now be affordable housing
• Only electronic submissions will be accepted by the City

The application and full program details are available online.

Key dates in the application process are:

• October 15, 10:30 a.m. – Online information session
• October 26, 4:30 p.m. – Last day to submit written questions
• November 17, 4:30 p.m. – Deadline to submit applications
• January 2021 – Staff report to Planning and Housing Committee and City Council with recommended projects

City of Toronto announces ActiveTO major road closures will be extended into October

Today, Mayor John Tory announced that major weekend road closures, as part of the popular ActiveTO suite of programs, will be extended into October. The popular weekend closures have provided space for thousands of people to be physically active, respect physical distancing and contributed to the overall wellbeing of residents. The routes run adjacent to some of Toronto’s busiest and most popular trails where people can walk, run and bike and have helped to reduce virus spread over the summer months

For this weekend, closures will be in place from Saturday, October 3 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, October 4 at 11 p.m.:

• Lake Shore Boulevard West (eastbound lanes only) from Windermere Avenue to Stadium Road. As a result, the eastbound Gardiner Expressway off ramp to Lake Shore Boulevard West (exit #146) will also be closed.
• Lake Shore Boulevard East (eastbound lanes only) from Leslie Street to Woodbine Avenue
• Bayview Avenue from Front Street East to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview Avenue

Knights of Columbus Drive-Through Community Food Drive

On Saturday October 3^rd, 9AM to 12PM, a Community Pre-Thanksgiving Food Drive will be held in the Parking Lot of St. Martin de Porres Church, 4179 Lawrence Ave E.

This will be a Drive-Through Food Drive hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Appropriate Covid-19 protocols will be observed (masks, sanitizer, distancing). All community members are invited to bring non-perishable food items, much needed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The food items will then be delivered to our community Food Bank.

I want to thank everyone for your efforts during these difficult times. It is very important that we all follow the mandatory physical distancing bylaw and the mandatory mask or face covering bylaw! Please take a moment to complete my COVID-19 Information Survey.

Today is Recovery Day in Toronto! Recovery Day is a day to recognize the stigma attached to substance abuse disorders and to raise awareness and celebrate those in our community who have recovered from addiction.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

Data as of September 27, 2020: Through the pandemic City of the Toronto has seen a total of 19,033 cases of COVID-19, an increase of 381 cases from the day before. Of these, 16,034 cases have recovered, an increase of 111 cases from the day before. There are 54 people currently hospitalized, an increase of 6 cases from the day before. To this date, there have been 1,178 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Ontario investing $52.5 million to recruit, retain and support more health care workers

The Ontario government is investing $52.5 million to recruit, retain and support over 3,700 more frontline health care workers and caregivers to ensure our health care system can meet any surge in demand, while continuing to provide safe and high-quality care to patients and long-term care residents. This investment is part of the province’s COVID-19 fall preparedness plan, Keeping Ontarians Safe: Preparing for Future Waves of COVID-19. For more information please read the news release.

Nuit Blanche Toronto unveils virtual program for October 3

The 15th annual Nuit Blanche Toronto will be reimagined for a virtual experience on Saturday, October 3 starting at 7 p.m. until October 12. This year, North America’s largest free contemporary art event will be delivered in a special digital format to ensure the safety of attendees and artists during the COVID-19 pandemic. The online event will present five streams of programming that will include talks, podcasts, a release of the 14-year archive called Nuit History, live streams, and artworks in augmented and virtual reality.

Artistic Director Dr. Julie Nagam’s curatorial theme, The Space Between Us, features art installations and interactions that focus on the connections across urban, polar and pacific landscapes. These connections reveal the space between us as a potential site for sharing knowledge.

COVID-19 Notification

Toronto Public Health (TPH) is notifying staff and patrons who visited the following restaurants and time periods about a potential exposure to COVID-19:

• Yonge Street Warehouse, 336 Yonge St., Toronto | September 10 to September 17

Seven (7) people linked to this establishment have tested positive for COVID-19. Five (5) are employees and two (2) are patrons. TPH has followed up with all close contacts who have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days and to go for testing.

• Regulars Bar, 668 King St. W., Toronto | September 13 to September 22

Three (3) people linked to this establishment have tested positive for COVID-19. All Three (3) are employees. TPH has followed up with all close contacts who have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days and to go for testing.

If you were at either establishment between the listed dates but have not been contacted by TPH, you are not identified as a close contact and are viewed as low risk.

Three restaurants and bars ordered to close by Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, issued orders to three restaurant and bar establishments in the City of Toronto to close under Section 22 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act. A fourth establishment is in the process of being served. The establishments are:

• MARBL, 455 King St. W.
• King Taps, 100 King St. W.
• Casa Mezcal, 291 King St. W.

These closure orders were undertaken based on Toronto Public Health (TPH) investigations, including contact tracing data, which has shown that each establishment has not taken the necessary steps to sufficiently protect both the public and employees from the spread of COVID-19. Today is Show Your Local Love Day in Toronto! Today we show our local love for our communities in support of the United Way and its network of 270 community partners. The United Way has already funded 340 projects across Toronto during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that no one is left behind. Be sure to Show Your Local Love today!

New COVID-19 Public Health measures implemented provincewide to keep Ontarians safe

To ensure the continued health and safety of Ontarians, reduce the risk of transmission, and limit future outbreaks of COVID-19, the Ontario government is implementing new province-wide restrictions effective 12:01 a.m. on Saturday September 26 and will:

• Apply additional measures and restrictions to restaurants, bars and other food and drink establishments (including nightclubs) by prohibiting the sale of alcohol after 11 p.m., and prohibiting the consumption of alcohol on the premises after 12:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. (including employees), and requiring establishments to close by 12:00 a.m. and remain closed until 5:00 a.m. except for takeout or delivery;
• Close all strip clubs across the province; and
• Require businesses or organizations to comply with any advice, recommendations, and instructions issued by the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health on screening for COVID-19.

The Ontario government is providing people with convenient free COVID-19 testing at up to 60 pharmacies in the province, starting today, September 25, 2020. This initiative will expand testing capacity well beyond the province’s 150 assessment centres. Scarborough Pharmacies offering COVID-19 Testing:

COVID-19 Provincial Testing Guidance Update

The Ministry of Health has revised their guidelines for those seeking a COVID-19 test at an assessment centre in order to prioritize resources for those who need them. Only those with symptoms, or asymptomatic individuals who have made close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19, and those in other high-risk populations such as health care workers, should seek testing. Residents are reminded that this weekend will be the final weekend of ActiveTO Major Weekend Road Closures. This weekend, closures will be in place from Saturday, September 26 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, September 27 at 11 p.m.:

Updated data for ActiveTO weekend road closures

Verified data counts from a variety of summer weekends in May, June, July and August show that ActiveTO Major Road Closures provided space for thousands of people to be physically active, contributing to overall wellbeing, along Toronto’s busiest and most popular trails to help stop virus spread. The following averages, taken over 15 hours on days without significant rainfall, were confirmed for weekends in June, July and August:

• 18,000 cyclists and 4,000 pedestrians on Lake Shore Boulevard West

• 6,300 cyclists and 5,700 pedestrians on Lake Shore Boulevard East
• 2,000 cyclists and 300 pedestrians on Bayview Avenue. Plus 1,900 cyclists and 250 pedestrians on the adjacent Don Valley Trail (eight-hour counts)

Emergency Telecommunicators are the calm voice at the other end of every 9-1-1 call, the first of the first responders, and the hidden heroes of emergency services. Toronto Paramedic Services, Toronto Fire Services and the Toronto Police Service recently recognized outstanding Emergency Telecommunicators through the annual Telecommunicator of the Year Awards. This year, the ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and each service has chosen to recognize their own 2019 award recipients during Toronto Public Service Week. The award winners for 2019 are:

  • Courtney Poirier – Emergency Medical Dispatcher of the Year
  • Melissa Bender – Communication Training Officer Mentor Award
  • Greg Lees – Senior Emergency Medical Dispatcher Leadership Award
• Toronto Fire Services
  • Shift 4 – Telecommunicators of the Year
• Toronto Police Services
  • Paul Youngs – Telecommunicator of the Year

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

Data as of September 24, 2020: Through the pandemic City of the Toronto has seen a total of 18,363 cases of COVID-19, an increase of 236 cases from the day before. Of these, 15,725 cases have recovered, an increase of 10 cases from the day before. There are 41 people currently hospitalized. To this date, there have been 1,178 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

As the virus continues to circulate in the community, it is vital that we are all reminded to adhere to Toronto Public Heath’s advice to practise physical distancing, stay within their social bubble of no more than 10 people, wash hands often and wear a mask or face covering where mandatory or when physical distancing cannot be maintained.

City of Toronto Waste Wizard and Drop-Off Depots

The City of Toronto’s Waste Wizard helps you find out what waste items go where! You can visit the Waste Wizard online or download the TOwaste app.

The City of Toronto operates seven Transfer Stations which have drop-off depots used to collect, sort and transfer all the City’s waste. Residents can also use these depots to dispose of their unwanted items such as Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste. COVID-19 One-time payment for persons with disabilities

The Government of Canada announced a one-time $600 payment in recognition of the extraordinary expenses faced by persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-time payment will be automatically issued to:

• holders of a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate, and
• beneficiaries as at July 1, 2020 of:
  • Canada Pension Plan Disability
  • Quebec Pension Plan Disability Pension, or
  • one of the disability supports provided by Veterans Affairs Canada

 If you are eligible but never applied for the Disability Tax Credit, or your certificate expired in 2019, you must do so by September 25, 2020. For more information please call 1-800-622-6232.

REMINDER: Scarborough Ribfest Drive Thru

This year’s Scarborough Ribfest will be a Drive Thru event taking place on Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27 from 11 am to 8 pm at the Centennial College Progress Campus.  This is a drive-thru event only. No one will be allowed to exit their vehicles and no pedestrian traffic will be admitted. Donations to the Rotary Club of Scarborough are requested.

Knights of Columbus Drive-Through Community Food Drive

On Saturday October 3^rd, 9AM to 12PM, a Community Pre-Thanksgiving Food Drive will be held in the Parking Lot of St. Martin de Porres Church, 4179 Lawrence Ave E.

This will be a Drive-Through Food Drive hosted by the Knights of Columbus. Appropriate Covid-19 protocols will be observed (masks, sanitizer, distancing). All community members are invited to bring non-perishable food items, much needed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The food items will then be delivered to our community Food Bank.

Survey: Eglinton East RapidTO Corridor and Priority Bus Lanes

The TTC is currently working on the RapidTO program which will move people more efficiently on transit by improving reliability, speed and capacity on some of the busiest surface transit routes in the city through implementation of priority bus-only lanes.

The TTC is asking for your input on potential service concepts for the Eglinton East corridor, along Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue and will launch in Fall 2020. The service concepts include: Option 1 – Maintain Existing Express Stops; Option 2 – All Stops Served by All Major Bus Routes; Option 3 – Reduced Stops on 905 Eglinton East Express; Option 4 – 986 Scarborough Express Diverted to Lawrence Avenue.

Ontario Investing More Than $1 Billion to Expand COVID-19 Testing and Contact Tracing

The Ontario government is building on the largest provincial testing initiative in Canada by providing $1.07 billion to expand COVID-19 testing and case and contact management. The government is also immediately investing $30 million to prevent and manage outbreaks in priority sectors, including the province’s long-term care homes, retirement homes and schools. These investments are part of the province’s comprehensive plan to prepare the health system for a second wave of COVID-19. For more information please read the news release.

2020 Toronto Book Awards long list announced

Just in time for fall reading, the City of Toronto and Toronto Public Library have named the 12 books longlisted for the 2020 Toronto Book Awards. Permits for Pumpkin Parades will not be issued this year

Recently the City of Toronto announced the cancellation of major City-led and City-permitted events through to the end of the year. Additionally, the provincial government announced new restrictions on social gatherings, reducing allowable gathering size to 25 people outdoors. These decisions were made in consultation with public health officials and support the directive that physical distancing is critical to reducing the spread of COVID-19.

With the new restrictions on gathering sizes, permits for pumpkin parades will not be issued this year, as it is not possible to limit the number of attendees at a given time to fewer than 25. More information to come.

Toronto Public Health enhanced COVID-19 data dashboard in response to COVID-19 resurgence

Toronto Public Health has launched an enhanced COVID-19 data dashboard. The updates will help the public understand the local impact of COVID-19 in Toronto as the city faces a resurgence in cases and include daily updates on new cases, more detailed weekly updates highlighting data trends, summary of active outbreaks and more. Ontario set to launch largest flu immunization campaign in province’s history

The Ontario government is implementing the largest flu immunization campaign in Ontario’s history. The campaign is part of the province’s comprehensive plan to prepare the health system for a second wave of COVID-19. The plan, entitled Keeping Ontarians Safe: Preparing for Future Waves of COVID-19, sets out a series of steps to prevent, identify and respond to any outbreak scenario this fall. The data posted to the City’s reporting platform is update three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

As of September 22, 2020, there were 17,712 cases of COVID-19 in the city, with 15,440 recovered cases from COVID-19. To date there have been 1,178 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. COVID-19 case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Torontonians should expect case counts to rise over the next few weeks. Residents need to act to limit case count increases through a combination of self-protection steps including watching your distance, wearing a mask and washing your hands. Everyone should limit contact with people they don’t live with as much as they can.

The TTC is currently working on the RapidTO program which will move people more efficiently on transit by improving reliability, speed and capacity on some of the busiest surface transit routes in the city through implementation of priority bus-only lanes.

The TTC is asking for your input on potential service concepts for the Eglinton East corridor, along Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue and will launch in Fall 2020. The service concepts include:

Option 1 – Maintain Existing Express Stops;

Option 2 – All Stops Served by All Major Bus Routes;

Option 3 – Reduced Stops on 905 Eglinton East Express;

Option 4 – 986 Scarborough Express Diverted to Lawrence Avenue.
