New COVID-19 Provincial Announcement on lowering limits for unmonitored and private social across ENTIRE PROVINCE

The Ontario government is reducing limits on the number of people permitted to attend unmonitored and private social gatherings across the entire province. This includes functions, parties, dinners, gatherings, BBQs or wedding receptions held in private residences, backyards, parks and other recreational areas.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the amended order will set a new limit on the number of people allowed to attend an unmonitored social gathering or organized public event to these New Measures:

• 10 people at an indoor event or gathering (previous limit of 50); or
• 25 people at an outdoor event or gathering with physical distancing (previous limit of 100).For more information please read the news release.

COVID-19 Notification for NOIR inside REBEL Entertainment Complex on September 11

Toronto Public Health (TPH) is notifying patrons and staff who visited NOIR inside REBEL Entertainment Complex, located at 11 Polson Street, on September 11, 2020 between 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., about a potential exposure to COVID-19. TPH is following up with all known close contacts based on the information provided in the contact tracing logs for staff and patrons. These individuals will be instructed to self-isolate for 14 days and to go for testing. More information can be read in the news release.

Toronto residents can show love to Toronto by becoming tourists in their own neighbourhood with StrollTO

Starting this weekend, residents can participate in StrollTO, part of the City of Toronto’s ShowLoveTO initiative. StrollTO will feature self-guided itineraries for each of the City’s 25 wards to encourage residents to actively discover shops, stops, places and spaces on their local main streets.

Using the StrollTO itineraries, residents can become tourists in their own city as they stroll through Toronto’s unique neighbourhoods. Each StrollTO itinerary will highlight points of interest that are culturally and historically significant with a spotlight on Indigenous placemaking and equity-seeking groups. The City of Toronto unveils new Toronto Sign

On Friday, September 18, the City unveiled the new Toronto Sign on Nathan Phillips Square and its first wrap in recognition of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent. A call for artists was issued in October 2019 and Danilo Deluxo McCallum’s design, Patterns of the People, was selected for the first wrap of the new Toronto Sign. City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

The data posted to the City’s reporting platform is update three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

As of September 20, there were 17,712 cases of COVID-19 in the city, with 15,382 recovered cases from COVID-19. To date there have been 1,178 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. COVID-19 case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Scarborough Ribfest Drive Thru

This year’s Scarborough Ribfest will be a Drive Thru event taking place on Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27 from 11 am to 8 pm at the Centennial College Progress Campus.  This is a drive-thru event only. No one will be allowed to exit their vehicles and no pedestrian traffic will be admitted. Donations to the Rotary Club of Scarborough are requested.

Toronto’s Theatre, Dance & Opera Sectors Launch Weeklong Campaign to Celebrate the Live Performances That Would Have Been in 2020-21. At this time of year, the performing arts would typically be celebrating the launch of the 2020-21 season. Instead the industry continues to feel the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey: Eglinton East RapidTO Corridor and Priority Bus Lanes

The TTC is currently working on the RapidTO program which will move people more efficiently on transit by improving reliability, speed and capacity on some of the busiest surface transit routes in the city through implementation of priority bus-only lanes.

The TTC is asking for your input on potential service concepts for the Eglinton East corridor, along Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue and will launch in Fall 2020. The service concepts include: Option 1 – Maintain Existing Express Stops; Option 2 – All Stops Served by All Major Bus Routes; Option 3 – Reduced Stops on 905 Eglinton East Express; Option 4 – 986 Scarborough Express Diverted to Lawrence Avenue.

New COVID-19 Provincial Announcement on lowering limits for unmonitored and private social gatherings in TORONTO, Ottawa and Peel Regions

Yesterday, the Ontario government has amended the rules for areas in Stage 3 to reduce the number of people permitted to attend unmonitored social gatherings and organized public events in three regions experiencing higher rates of transmission of COVID-19. This includes functions, parties, dinners, gatherings, BBQs or wedding receptions held in private residences, backyards, parks and other recreational areas. This amended order came into effect TODAY, September 18 at 12:01am.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the amended order will set a new limit on the number of people allowed to attend an unmonitored social gathering or organized public event in three specific regions to these New Measures:

• 10 people at an indoor event or gathering (previous limit of 50); or
• 25 people at an outdoor event or gathering with physical distancing (previous limit of 100).

Indoor and outdoor events and gatherings cannot be merged together. These are not accumulative and gatherings of 35 (25 outdoors and 10 indoors) are not permitted. The new limits only apply to persons within the boundaries of Toronto Public Health, Ottawa Public Health and Peel Public Healthregions. For more information please read the news release.

City of Toronto invites residents to become Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions

The City of Toronto invites residents and community leaders to help inspire climate action by becoming a Neighbourhood Climate Action Champion. Participants in this new City program will receive virtual training and support to empower them to support residents in developing innovative climate action projects that reflect the needs and values of their communities.

Participants must be willing to commit four to five hours per month (minimum 50 hours per year) to engaging their community in developing and implementing neighbourhood-based projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Participants will receive an honorarium of $500. For more information please read the news release.

Mayor John Tory unveils new Toronto Sign and its first wrap recognizing the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent

Today, Mayor John Tory unveiled the City of Toronto’s new Toronto Sign on Nathan Phillips Square and its first wrap, Patterns of the People, in recognition of the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent.

Mayor Tory was joined by Deputy Mayor Michael Thompson (Ward 21 Scarborough Centre), Chair of the Economic and Community Development Committee, and Danilo Deluxo McCallum, the Toronto-based artist who designed the new wrap.

One of the design features of the Toronto Sign is a vinyl wrap on the outer edges of its letters. The wrap is refreshed approximately every 12 months. The design of the Toronto Sign wrap is used to promote events, projects and City priorities. Themes for past Toronto Sign wraps have included: Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, Nuit Blanche Toronto artist installation by JR, Toronto Neighbourhoods, Canada 150, My City My Six Exhibition, and Indigenous Iconography. City of Toronto completes major construction projects this summer and continues important work to renew aging infrastructure

This construction season, the City of Toronto has worked to accelerate as many important construction projects as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. Crews completed a number of major projects this summer, some on accelerated schedules due to lower traffic volumes, and will begin more work this fall to continue to renew and improve aging water and transportation infrastructure across the city.

So far, the City has completed road resurfacing work on more than 170 local roads. The remainder of the 323 local roads planned for resurfacing work is on-track to be completed this fall. The City is also on-track to complete sewer upgrades on more than 100 streets to protect basements from flooding.

During construction, the public are advised to plan their travel in advance, consider alternate routes, be aware that street parking may be impacted, obey signage around work zones and be patient while traveling in and around work zones throughout the city. Individuals are encouraged to use the City’s web-based map, www.toronto.ca/roadrestrictions, to help plan travel and avoid road closures. Community Environment Days

The City of Toronto will hold its second 2020 Community Environment Day event this Sunday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scarborough Drop-Off Depot located at 1 Transfer Place. The drive-thru event will allow for the safe disposal of household hazardous waste and electronic items, and donation of household goods and clothing for reuse. Free bagged compost will be available for pickup with a limit of two bags per vehicle while supplies last. Environment Days will be held at the City’s Drop-off Depots on Sundays until November 1. Keeler Boulevard Speed Bump Petition

Recently, I received a petition from residents requesting the installation of speed bumps on Keeler Boulevard. I’ve submitted this request to the City of Toronto Transportation Services to conduct a study as the guidelines require. The study has been done and Transportation staff have concluded the installation of speed bumps is not justified.

As your City Councillor, I am supporting the community’s request, and this item will be put to vote at Scarborough Community Council on October 16, 2020. I now need your support in writing or by agreeing to speaking at the Scarborough Community Council.

In the meantime, I will continue to ask Toronto Police Services to enforce the posted speed limit on Keeler Boulevard. Ontario launches new COVID-19 screening tool to help protect students and staff

The Ontario government launched a new voluntary interactive screening tool to assist parents, students and staff with the daily assessment of COVID-19 symptoms and risk factors that is required before attending school. The results will let parents, students, and education staff know whether they should attend school each day or guide at-risk individuals to proper resources. This tool is another layer of prevention that the province is using to protect the health and safety of students, staff, and the communities where they live and work. City of Toronto supporting further action to confront COVID-19 resurgence

This morning, Mayor John Tory and other senior members of the City of Toronto COVID-19 response team met with Toronto Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa to discuss what public health measures would be effective in helping push back against the COVID-19 resurgence.

During today’s City’s COVID-19 media update, Mayor Tory outlined Toronto Public Health’s advice based on the current COVID-19 cases being investigated by health officials:

• Reduce the social gatherings limits
• Enhance enforcement on existing restrictions
• Expand the mandatory mask requirements

Mayor Tory indicated that over the coming days, the City will be moving to act on all three of these areas – some which will require cooperation with our partners in the provincial government. For more information please read the news release.

City of Toronto staff report recommends a public consultation and next steps on renaming Dundas Street and other public assets

A City of Toronto staff report going before Executive Committee on September 23 provides recommendations, which includes a public consultation, on the City’s response to the petition to rename Dundas Street and address other civic assets with the Dundas name.

The petition was created following global discussions on racial injustices, inequality and anti-Black racism, which led the public to scrutinize the origins and history of monuments, street names, parks and buildings across Toronto. The petition objects to the street’s namesake, Scottish politician Henry Dundas, who was involved in delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade, causing more than half a million more Black people to be enslaved in the British Empire.

The report recommends the City host public consultations on the renaming of Dundas Street and on future street namings and renamings, monumental removals and additions, reinterpretations and revocations and report back to Executive Committee in the first quarter of 2021. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has launched a new online app to help high school students stay connected and organized. By logging in with their TDSB school ID, their timetable is automatically populated allowing them to easily add notes, goals and details to each course. Today, September 15 is Rehabilitation Day where we acknowledge the life-changing impact that rehabilitation services have made on the lives of residents. Today we recognize the rehabilitation professionals who dedicate themselves to helping others, through rehabilitation services.

As we continue to battle with the circulation of COVID-19, let us continue to honour and give thanks to all health care workers who have committed to keeping our communities healthy. Doctors, nurses, paramedics, long-term care staff and hospital administrative and support staff step into work each day dedicated to saving lives and keeping people safe. Their ongoing support and efforts have been vital during this pandemic and will continue to play a crucial role in keeping Toronto safe.

City of Toronto calls for Federal-Provincial-City partnership to create 3,000 permanent, affordable homes over the next 24 months

The City of Toronto has issued the COVID-19 Housing and Homelessness Recovery Response Plan — an urgent appeal to the federal and provincial governments to create 3,000 permanent, affordable homes, within the next 24 months, for homeless, vulnerable and marginalized residents. These investments will support the Council-approved HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan aimed at helping more than 340,000 households in Toronto over the next 10 years.

The 3,000 permanent, affordable homes would comprise: 1,000 new permanent modular homes; 1,000 new permanent affordable rental homes created through acquisitions and shovel-ready construction projects; and new portable housing benefits that will assist 1,000 people secure housing and pay rent. The plan also calls for funding to assist 2,000 of these residents with the supports required to maintain stable housing, such as mental health services, substance abuse services, assistance with daily living activities for those with disabilities and senior services. ActiveTO major weekend road closures to expand to Yonge Street on final two Sundays in September

Mayor John Tory announced today that the City of Toronto will expand ActiveTO major weekend road closures to include Yonge Street, between Davenport Road and Queen’s Quay, on the final two Sundays in September.

In partnership with Open Streets, the City will add part of Yonge Street to the popular weekend road closures initiative on Sunday, September 20 and Sunday, September 27. Roads will begin to close starting as early as 8 a.m. and be reopened by 3 p.m. each day. When all closures are in place, including Yonge Street, there will be more than 14 total kilometres of major roadway available for walking, running and biking on Sundays. The other weekend road closure locations typically include parts of Lake Shore Boulevard West and East and Bayview Avenue. For more information please read the news release.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

As of September 14, 2020 there have been 16,942 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 69 cases from the day before, and 15,044 recovered cases. To date, there have been 1,177 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. COVID-19 case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform. The data posted to the City’s reporting plat form is update three times per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Eglinton East Priority Bus Lanes – Installation and Bus Stop Placement

On July 28, 2020, City Council unanimously approved Priority Bus Lanes along sections of Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and north of Morningside Avenue to Ellesmere Road. As part of implementing the Priority Bus Lanes on Eglinton Avenue East, construction crews and vehicles will be active along the corridor from September 14 until December 31, 2020.

• Pavement Resurfacing (completed by September 18)
• Pavement Marking & Sign Installation (completed by November 30)
• Bus Stop Consolidation and Placement (Estimated: October 15-December 31)

Survey: Eglinton East RapidTO Corridor and Priority Bus Lanes

The TTC is currently working on the RapidTO program which will move people more efficiently on transit by improving reliability, speed and capacity on some of the busiest surface transit routes in the city through implementation of priority bus-only lanes.

The TTC is asking for your input on potential service concepts for the Eglinton East corridor, along Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Morningside Avenue and will launch in Fall 2020. The service concepts include:

Option 1 – Maintain Existing Express Stops;

Option 2 – All Stops Served by All Major Bus Routes;

Option 3 – Reduced Stops on 905 Eglinton East Express;

Option 4 – 986 Scarborough Express Diverted to Lawrence Avenue.

Toronto Transit Commission Public Forum on Accessible Transit

On October 1, 2020 from 7pm to 9pm, TTC Board members, management and staff, and members of the Advisory Committee on Accessible Transit (ACAT) will host the TTC’s first ever virtual Public Forum on Accessible Transit. This event is held annually to hear from the public about the accessibility of conventional TTC and door-to-door (Wheel-Trans) public transit services in Toronto. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’re hosting this event online this year. Register for the 2020 Virtual Public Forum on Accessible Transit. Scarborough Ribfest Drive Thru

This year’s Scarborough Ribfest will be a Drive Thru event taking place on Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27 from 11 am to 8 pm at the Centennial College Progress Campus.  This is a drive-thru event only. No one will be allowed to exit their vehicles and no pedestrian traffic will be admitted. Donations to the Rotary Club of Scarborough are requested.

September 14 has been proclaimed Champions of Care Day. Today we honour and thank all front-line health care workers for the commitment to saving lives, keeping our community safe and for their heroic response during the COVID-19 pandemic in our city.

Every day, thousands of front-line health workers play a crucial role in keeping our communities healthy and as safe as possible by providing life-saving service in clinics, centres and hospitals across the city. Their support has been vital during this pandemic. Their efforts, collectively with the efforts of all Torontonians, allowed our city to experience a limited strain on the health-care system during this first wave of the pandemic. Health care workers will continue to play a crucial role in keeping Torontonians save as the City readies for a possible COVID-19 resurgence

To show their appreciation, Toronto residents have rallied in support of health care workers since the onset of the pandemic. As the City thanks all health care workers on the front lines for keeping Torontonians safe, residents are encouraged to show their gratitude in their local communities and online with a hashtag #championsofcare. City of Toronto launches #ShowLoveTO to help Toronto businesses, neighbourhoods and residents safely recover and rebuild

ShowLoveTO is a local initiative that will encourage residents to show their love for Toronto by safely connecting with neighbours, supporting local businesses and artists, and exploring their city neighbourhoods to help rebuild the social and economic fabric of Toronto.

The following ShowLoveTO initiatives will engage Toronto residents this fall:

• , a city-wide temporary public art initiative involving large-scale projections in each of the City’s 25 wards, will animate Toronto neighbourhoods. Starting September 16, BigArtTO will provide opportunities for local artists and set the stage for ArtworxTO: Toronto’s Year of Public Art 2021.
• will feature self-guided itineraries for each of the City’s 25 wards to motivate residents to actively discover the unexplored shops, stops, places and spaces on their local main streets, starting September 18. Residents will become tourists as they stroll Toronto’s unique neighbourhoods.
• , a partnership between Destination Toronto and the City, will celebrate Toronto’s culinary community and support the industry’s economic recovery. The city-wide promotion will showcase Toronto’s diverse food culture through a digital platform offering content, special offers and unique culinary experiences from September 23 to October 30. • time-ticketed, guided neighbourhood walking tours anchored at Toronto History Museums, connects Toronto’s communities by providing equitable and inclusive access to local history, heritage and land-based learnings. City of Toronto bylaws prohibit cormorant hunting in Toronto

On July 31, 2020, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced that hunting season for double-crested cormorants could take place in Ontario starting September 15. Cormorant hunting, like all hunting, is not permitted in Toronto under City of Toronto bylaws.

The bylaws prohibiting the discharge of firearms in the City of Toronto are listed in Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 463, Firearms. This includes using a firearm while in a boat for the purposes of hunting. Possession or use of a weapon in a park or on a beach is also prohibited under Municipal Code Chapter 608, Parks. The City’s boundaries extend into Lake Ontario to the United States border and east and west to the borders of neighbouring municipalities. For more information please read the news release.

City of Toronto launches ParksPlayTO and Summer in the 6IX to provide free outdoor programs for children and youth in Toronto

Today, the City of Toronto launched two new outdoor recreation initiatives for Toronto children and youth. ParksPlayTO and Summer in the 6IX will engage Toronto youth, children and their families and help animate up to 100 local Toronto parks and outdoor spaces this summer.

Beginning Monday, July 20, ParksPlayTO will offer free drop-in and activity-based, recreation programming Monday to Friday each week at multiple locations. ParksPlayTO will offer activities such as nature exploring, gardening, active games, arts and crafts, family fitness, story-telling and music circles for children and their caregivers. Any child age 12 and under accompanied by a caregiver age 18 or older can participate in ParksPlayTO. Caregivers can bring up to four children and must remain at the park to participate in the program. ParksPlayTO morning sessions will begin at 9:15 a.m. and afternoon sessions will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Summer in the 6IX, which will also begin on Monday, is a free program designed for Toronto youth, aged 13 to 24, offering opportunities to drop in, meet up with friends and participate in fun, themed activities. Summer in the 6IX will offer a range of programming including dance, fitness, ecology and sports as well as leadership, employment, arts and media. Summer in the 6IX will be available to all Toronto youth at a variety of Toronto parks. There will be three sessions offered a day at multiple locations across the city seven days a week. City to open 14 Emergency Cooling Centres during Heat Warning

Environment and Climate Change Canada has declared a Heat Warning for Toronto starting Friday, July 17 to Monday, July 20. Extreme heat is associated with negative health impacts ranging from heat stress to heat stroke and death.

It is mandatory for the public to wear non-medical masks or face coverings, with some exceptions, at all ECCS. A mask will be provided at the ECC to those without a mask who want to enter. An interactive map is available to help those who need to locate an ECC, as well as other cool spaces, such as swimming pools, wading pools and splash pads near them. Tips to protect yourself from the heat are available on the City’s website.

ActiveTO road closures, cycling network and Quiet Streets

The following ActiveTO major road closures will be in place this weekend, from Saturday, July 18 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, July 19 at 11 p.m.:

• Lake Shore Boulevard West (eastbound lanes only) from Windermere Avenue to Stadium Road. As a result, the eastbound Gardiner Expressway off ramp to Lake Shore Boulevard West (exit #146) will also be closed
• Lake Shore Boulevard East (eastbound lanes only) from Leslie Street to just south of Woodbine Avenue (Kew Beach Avenue)
• Bayview Avenue from Front Street East to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview Avenue

Restaurant not obeying provincial orders

Toronto restaurants and bars continue to be open for delivery, takeout and outdoor dining only. Customers can only be inside a restaurant or bar to access an outdoor dining area (i.e. walk through to a back patio), pick up food, pay or use the washroom; while within the enclosed public space, customers and employees must be wearing a mask as required by the establishment’s mask policy and the City’s Mask or Face Covering Bylaw.

The City has received many complaints regarding restaurants and bars not following physical distancing requirements, as well as illegally offering customers indoor dining. Enforcement officers from Municipal Licensing & Standards, Toronto Public Health, Toronto Police Service, and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will be teaming up to increase inspections of liquor-licensed establishments in the city this weekend to address businesses that, despite widespread efforts to educate them on public health requirements to keep their customers, employees and the public safe, continue to disobey provincial orders.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19

There are 15,037 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 81 cases since Wednesday. There are 139 people hospitalized, with 29 in ICU. In total, 13,377 people have recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 118 cases since Wednesday. To date, there have been 1,133 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Mandatory Face Coverings on the GO Transit and UP Express

As of July 21, Metrolinx is making face coverings mandatory on GO Transit and UP Express as they’re essential to keeping everyone safe on transit. As more customers are returning to GO and UP services each day and as the Greater Toronto Area prepares for Stage 3 of the recovery process, now is the right time to bring in a mandatory face-covering policy. Toronto Zoo Welcomes Birth of Endangered Red Panda Cubs: First Red Panda Cubs Born at Your Toronto Zoo in 24 Years

In the late afternoon of Tuesday, July 14, 2020, Ila, your Toronto Zoo’s two-year-old female red panda, gave birth to two healthy cubs. This is the first red panda pregnancy at the Zoo since 1996, and this is the first offspring for mother Ila with father Suva, a three-year-old male.

Both mom and cubs are doing well, and Wildlife Care Keepers continue to monitor Ila and cubs closely, using cameras for minimal disturbance, to ensure cubs continue to nurse from Ila regularly. Manifesting Amazing Dreams

The Manifesting Amazing Dreams program is an initiative of the CTI and is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS). The program supports youth between the ages of 12 and 20 who are experiencing multiple barriers, including, but not limited to, involvement/risk of involvement in criminal activity, the justice system, and gang activity. The program is delivered twice per week for 10 weeks.  The youth receive an honorarium of $20 per session for their participation. The program will commence on August 4. TOMORROW July 18 from 10AM to 2PM a Community Food Drive hosted by the Knights of Columbus will be held in the parking lot of St. Martin de Porres Church (4179 Lawrence Ave. E.). Appropriate physical distancing protocols will be observed. All community members are invited to bring non-perishable food items that will be taken from the trunks of your car by the members of the Knights of Columbus, so you will not have to leave your vehicle. The food donations collected will be delivered on Monday to the West Hill Food Bank (4205 Lawrence Ave. E.)

City to open 14 Emergency Cooling Centres during Heat Warning

Environment and Climate Change Canada has declared a Heat Warning for Toronto starting tomorrow, Friday, July 17 to Monday, July 20. Extreme heat is associated with negative health impacts ranging from heat stress to heat stroke and death.

During periods of hot weather, the safety of all residents is the priority. The City of Toronto will open 14 Emergency Cooling Centres (ECCs) tomorrow for the duration of the Heat Warning. Please note that the ECC Parkdale location has changed from the Parkdale Library, 1303 Queen St. W., to Masaryk-Cowan Community Recreation Centre, 220 Cowan Ave. The ECC at Wallace-Emerson Community Centre is no longer open due to previous low attendance and to make additional space for camp.

It is mandatory for the public to wear non-medical masks or face coverings, with some exceptions, at all ECCS. A mask will be provided at the ECC to those without a mask who want to enter.

An interactive map is available to help those who need to locate an ECC, as well as other cool spaces, such as swimming pools, wading pools and splash pads near them. Tips to protect yourself from the heat are available on the City’s website.

City invites applications for Women4ClimateTO Mentorship Programme

The City of Toronto has launched the Toronto edition of C40’s international Women4Climate Mentorship Programme to encourage and inspire women’s leadership in responding to climate change. This program matches mentors from local government, the business sector, international organizations and social agencies with emerging women leaders. Mentors share their knowledge and experiences, supporting the mentees in becoming powerful advocates in addressing climate change. Three Canadian cities are participating in the program: Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Over seven months, Women4ClimateTO will engage 12 women who live, work or attend school in Toronto and provide a program that combines mentorship, networking and collaborative learning opportunities. Following the formal mentorship program, mentees will participate in a pitch competition to showcase their ideas. The application deadline has been extended to July 31. New COVID-19 health and safety regulations for landlords of rental apartments in Toronto

On June 29, 2020, City Council adopted new health and safety rules for apartment building owners and operators to follow during the COVID-19 pandemic. These rules aim to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in multi-tenanted buildings. Until October 31, 2020, apartment building owners and operators registered in the RentSafeTO: Apartment Building Standards bylaw enforcement program are required to:

0. provide hand sanitizer in all common areas that remain open, such as building entrances and laundry rooms.
1. ensure non-essential common areas, such as gyms and playrooms, remain closed in compliance with provincial restrictions
2. clean frequently-touched surfaces in all open common areas with household cleaners and disinfectants twice daily and when visibly dirty, and
3. post Toronto Public Health signage on physical distancing and shared laundry rooms.

More information on the new requirements for landlords is available on the RentSafeTO for Building Owners webpage. If tenants have health and safety concerns, they are advised to talk to their landlord or building manager first and submit a service request. If the landlord does not take action and the problems persist, tenants should contact 311 for the RentSafeTO team to respond.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19

There are 14,956 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 59 cases since Monday. There are 145 people hospitalized, with 30 in ICU. In total, 13,259 people have recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 111 cases since Monday. To date, there have been 1,126 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Public Safety Alert, Fraud Investigation, Online Employment Scam

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an ongoing fraud investigation regarding an online employment scam that reports, the employee is directed to pick up and deposit a cheque, turn the money over to another person or be directed to take the cash and deposit it into a bitcoin machine. Police would like to remind the public there are no delivery jobs that involve picking up cheques made out to employees and depositing them into their own accounts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1400, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477), online at www.222tips.com, online on our Facebook Leave a Tip page, or text TOR and your message to CRIMES (274637). For more information please read the news release.

Toronto Public Services Board concludes virtual Town Hall Sessions

The Board, today, concluded a series of virtual town hall meetings held on July 9, 10, 15 and 16, 2020.  These meetings were created in response to the thousands of messages that the Board has received, as an opportunity to hear directly from the public on matters concerning police accountability, reform, and community safety priorities. 

The submissions the Board received are being compiled and will be accessible here before the next Board meeting.  The Board wishes to thank all members of the public and organizations that participated in these Town Halls, viewed them online, or otherwise made their views on these important issues known. In addition, please be advised that the Board meeting originally scheduled for Thursday July 30, 2020 has been cancelled, a newly scheduled Board meeting to be held on August 18, 2020.

Urgent Rapid Access to Housing Breakdown

I’ve received a number of requests for a breakdown of the urgent rapid housing access in the City of Toronto. The City of Toronto’s Shelter, Support and Housing Administration have permanently housed 1,309 people from the shelter system over the last four months. 721 households, of which 468 were singles and 841 were families, 133 people were placed in RGI units through the centralized waiting list, 960 people were placed in private market rent with the support of housing allowance and 216 people were placed in vacant TCHC units.

Everyone included in this breakdown was placed into housing directly from shelter and the units are permanent. If you have any follow-up questions or concerns please contact my office at councillor_ainslie@toronto.ca or 416-396-7222.

City of Toronto provides additional support for individuals and families in shelters

The City of Toronto is supporting newcomers experiencing homelessness with an innovative new temporary program as part of the COVID-19 shelter response.

The City is utilizing vacant units in four Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) buildings slated for demolition as part of the Regent Park revitalization to provide temporary accommodation for refugee/asylum seekers. The program supports the City’s efforts to provide increased physical distancing in the shelter system.

Clients will move-in on a phased in-basis starting in mid-July. There are up to 70 units spread over four buildings that can accommodate up to 160 clients until the end of the year. The site will operate temporarily until such time as the clients have all found permanent housing or by December 15, 2020 in alignment with the revitalization schedule for the site. City of Toronto community centres and indoor pools to open next week

Today, Mayor Tory announced that City of Toronto’s community centres, recreation centres and indoor pools will be reopening on Monday, July 20. The community centres, recreation centres and indoor pools were closed in March to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As Toronto remains in Stage 2 of the Province’s reopening plan, a total of 119 community and recreation centres, including 29 locations with indoor pools will reopen to the public for limited use on July 20. Indoor pools will reopen for drop-in lane and leisure swimming.

At this time, the City’s community centres cannot offer or facilitate indoor sports, fitness and wellness activities, singing and dancing programs as well as food preparation, distribution or dining activities where equipment or supplies are passed or shared amongst participants. This includes activities like card games, chess or dominoes. The City anticipates that some of these amenities and activities will resume when Toronto reaches Stage 3 of reopening. Two City of Toronto Parks, Forestry & recreation workers test positive for COVID-19

This City of Toronto was made aware of two employees with the Parks, Forestry & Recreation Division (PFR) who have tested positive for COVID-19. Exposure to the virus occurred between July 6 and 10 and did not occur in the workplace. One employee who tested positive has had brief contact with a part-time worker at the Ellesmere Community Centre CampTO program. The program will not be required to close. There are 11 campers at this camp. The other employee works in sanitation for PFR and does not come into contact with children or families at CampTO.

No children taking part in CampTO programs, which began yesterday, July 13, have been directly exposed to the employees who have tested positive. The City, however, is in the process now of advising families, employees, the union, and the public and of these cases as a matter of public transparency. Toronto Public Health advises that the risk of contracting COVID-19 for children and families at this CampTO program is very low. For more information, please read the news release.

Extendicare Guildwood Home Update

Extendicare Guildwood is happy to welcome friends and family for outdoor visits. Outdoor visits can be scheduled by contacting Rosanne at 416-266-711 ext. 237 between 8:30am to 4:30pm from Monday to Thursday. Please call two days in advance when booking your visit.

Family Town Hall: This Friday July 17, SHN will moderate the Family Townhall with panelists from SHN and Extendicare. The meeting will take place at 2pm. More details about the meeting and how to join can be found HERE.

Toronto Senior Services and Long-Term Care (SSLTC) COVID-19 Update Bulletin

Removing Mask or Face Covering for Outdoor Visits: SSLTC has confirmed with both the Ministry and Toronto Public Health, that once visitors are seated 6 feet away from the resident for an outdoor visit, the mask or face covering can be removed and a face shield used. This enhancement is within the Ministry guidelines, Resuming Visits in Long-Term Care Homes. Once your visit is over, please put your mask or face covering back on.

Active on-line screening in LTC is here: The City of Toronto is testing the use of online health screening for long-term care home staff and visitors. Castleview Wychwood Towers are currently conducting a pilot. The system allows employees and visitors to complete the On-line Screening Process before their shift/using a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. Welcome back to your Toronto Zoo! Timed-Tickets Now Available through August 5, 2020!

Your Toronto Zoo has established new protocols to ensure your visit is a safe and happy one including online booking to purchase timed-tickets before your visit allowing us to socially distance guests, new one-way walking paths, additional cleaning protocols, wearing facial coverings, and hand sanitizer stations throughout the Zoo. A number of benches, litter receptacles and transit shelters have been approved for installation in our ward. These elements will be installed within the 2020 year or over the next few years. City of Toronto child care centres set to reopen beginning June 29

Beginning June 29, 11 of the 47 City of Toronto-operated Toronto Early Learning & Child Care Centres (TELCCC) will reopen to support parents returning to work and to help with the restart of the economy. The Province of Ontario announced that licensed child care services could begin to operate as of June 12 as part of the Province’s reopening plan. The 11 childcare centres set to reopen are the following:

• Malvern Early Learning and Child Care, 1321 Neilson Rd.
• Danforth Early Learning and Child Care Centre, 1125 Danforth Ave. 
• Blake Street Early Learning and Child Care Centre, 84 Blake St.
• Jesse Ketchum Early Learning and Child Care, 7 Berryman St.
• City Kids Early Learning and Child Care Centre, 34 Bathurst St.
• Metro Hall Early Learning and Child Care Centre, 55 John St.
• Thomas Berry Early Learning and Child Care, 3495 Lake Shore Blvd. W.
• Falstaff Early Learning and Child Care, 10 Falstaff Ave.
• Berner Trail Early Learning & Child Care Centre, 120 Berner Trail 
• Flemingdon Early Learning & Child Care Centre, 29 St Dennis Dr.  
• Rowntree Early Learning & Child Care Centre, 2765 Islington Ave.

Childcare centres are required to follow strict operational requirements to help ensure the health and safety of children, their families and staff. The City is taking a careful and gradual approach to reopening centres with the majority of the remaining centres planned to reopen in July and August. This weekend: ActiveTO major road closures

The following ActiveTO major road closures will be in place this weekend, from Saturday, June 27 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, June 28 at 11 p.m.:

• Lake Shore Boulevard West (eastbound lanes only) from Windermere Avenue to Stadium Road. As a result, the eastbound Gardiner Expressway off ramp to Lake Shore Boulevard West (exit #146) will also be closed
• Lake Shore Boulevard East (eastbound lanes only) from Leslie Street to just south of Woodbine Avenue (Kew Beach Avenue)
• Bayview Avenue from Front Street East to Rosedale Valley Road, and River Street from Gerrard Street East to Bayview Avenue

Recovery & Rebuild public engagement survey closes June 30

While the City of Toronto continues to work on reducing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring the delivery of essential and critical City services, it is also working to prepare for Toronto’s recovery in the weeks and months to come.

The Toronto Office of Recovery and Rebuild is seeking feedback from individuals, businesses and community groups on how Toronto can recover, rebuild and emerge from this pandemic even stronger.  An , as well as tips and tools for hosting your own discussion, is now available at toronto.ca/RecoveryRebuild. The survey is open until June 30, 2020.

Toronto Public Health Guidance Documents and Infographics

Toronto Public Health (TPH) has developed guidance documents to support the safe reopening of local businesses and community organizations. All businesses and organizations will need to adjust how they operate to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Whether a business owner or operator, an employee, or a customer, it is important residents stay informed to understand what our new normal will look like in the months ahead.

There are range of documents available to address the unique circumstances of different types of workplaces and community settings in our city, available on the City’s website. 

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

There are 14,094 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 65 cases since yesterday. There are 249 people hospitalized, with 62 in ICU. In total 12,127 people have recovered from COVID-19. To date, there have been 1,070 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough Soles and Steps need your support!

Amidst the ongoing worldwide conversations surrounding systematic racial barriers, Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough is raising donations to continue their work surrounding diversity and equity while enhancing the services and programs currently provided for the racialized families residing in underserved areas of East Scarborough.

The Club provides service to over 5,000 children in the East Scarborough community residing in priority neighborhoods, where 30% of the population lives below the poverty line, less than half completed post-secondary education, where 70% are visible minorities and a quarter of the population identifies as Black. Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre Lane Swim Resumes July 4

With the City of Toronto moving to Stage 2 of the Ontario Government’s Reopening plan, training pools are now able to open for public access with specific health and safety measures in place. Public access to training pools will start on July 4. Lane swims are available to members, students, City of Toronto punch pass holders, or anyone who purchases a swimming day pass. 2020 Property Tax Final Billing

In the City’s ongoing effort to modernize City services and support property owners during the COVID-19 pandemic, Revenue Services partnered with Technology Services to develop an online application portal for the new temporary Property Tax Payment Deferral Program.  This digital service was developed and launched within weeks and property owners are now able to apply and upload supporting documents using a fully online application process.  Property owners are able to request additional time to pay property taxes without incurring late payment penalties or interest charges for a six-month period effective June 1 to November 30, 2020. Paper applications are available, however property owners are being encouraged to apply online to streamline and fast-track the approval process.

Prime Minister announces new mobile app to help notify Canadians of COVID-19 exposure

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the upcoming launch of a new nation-wide mobile app to provide notifications of exposure to COVID-19 across Canada, with beta testing to begin in Ontario. The app will help Canadians and public health officials identify and isolate the spread of the virus more quickly. Use of the app will be voluntary. Ontario enhancing COVID-19 case and contact management

As the province safely and gradually reopens, the Ontario government is enhancing case and contact management to quickly test, trace and isolate cases of COVID-19 to stop the spread of the virus and prepare for any potential future waves. The government’s enhanced strategy focuses on strengthening and standardizing case and contact management by:

• Ensuring all new cases and close contacts are identified early
• Support public health units with additional staff from Statistic Canada
• Improve technology tools by modernizing Integrated Public Health Information Systems
• Launching a privacy-first exposure notification app to alert Ontarians when they may have been exposed to COVID-19

Temporary Commercial Eviction Moratorium

Yesterday, the Ontario government passed the Protecting Small Business Act, temporarily halting or reversing evictions of commercial tenants and protecting them from being locked out or having their assets seized during COVID-19. The legislation applies to businesses that are eligible for federal/provincial rent assistance for evictions from May 1, 2020 until August 31, 2020. Learn more here.

Mandatory masks or face coverings on the TTC

Effective July 2, 2020 masks or face coverings will be mandatory on the TTC. Children under two and those with medical conditions will be exempt. Instructions for wearing a mask and making your own simple face covering are available here.

Registration for CaféTO

Registration is now open for CaféTO. The proposed new program aims to make it easier for many restaurant and bar operators to open patios, expand them, and access additional space for physical distancing, in accordance with public health guidelines, safety priorities, and accessibility requirements.

Restaurant and bar operators can visit toronto.ca/cafeTO to learn more about the proposed program, its requirements and how to register.

The CaféTO Placement Guidebook is now online. The CaféTO staff report that will be considered by Executive Committee on June 22, followed by Council on June 29 is now available.

ORHMA webinar for local restaurants and bars

The Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association (ORHMA) is planning a complimentary 1-hour webinar for business owners to help prepare establishments for re-opening.

Topic: Patio Opening & Extensions for establishments in the City of Toronto

When: Tuesday June 23 at 1 p.m.

Who: Representatives from ORHMA will be joined by representatives from the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and the City of Toronto’s Municipal Licensing and Standards (MLS) who will offer their input and answer questions.

ActiveTO major road closures, Quiet Streets & Cycling Network

The following ActiveTO Major Road closures that will be in place this weekend, from Saturday, June 20 at 6 a.m. to Sunday, June 21 at 11 p.m. include:

CampTO programs start July 13

The City of Toronto will begin to offer summer camps across the city starting on July 13 as part of its CampTO initiative. CampTO is a new creative camp experience that offers outdoor and physical activities, active and quiet games, arts and crafts, and nature-based activities. This camp features additional staff for smaller camper to leader ratios to help maintain physical distancing in camp and ensure safe supervision of campers. Guidelines include lower ratios and capacity, physical distancing, mandatory health screening and enhanced facility cleaning. CampTO is designed for maximum fun and safety for campers 6 – 12 years of age. Learn more at toronto.ca/camps.

City of Toronto records 1,000 deaths due to COVID-19

The City of Toronto today announced the 1,000th death due to COVID-19 and sends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends for their loss. This tragic milestone is a reminder that we must all continue our efforts to fight COVID-19 and protect people in our community. Learn more here.

City of Toronto update on COVID-19 cases

There are 13,661 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 73 cases since yesterday. There are 276 people hospitalized, with 72 in ICU. In total, 11,501 people have recovered from COVID-19, an increase of 104 cases since yesterday. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.

Residents are reminded of the importance of adhering to Toronto Public Health’s advice to wash their hands often, stay within their social circle of no more than 10 people, practise physical distancing, or wear a face covering or non-medical mask to protect others when in settings where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough Youth Summit: Youth Impact 2020

The Boys’ and Girls’ Club of East Scarborough Presents a two-day fun filled youth conference through Zoom. Throughout the conference, participants enjoy a multitude of workshops where they can develop essential personal skills, and get educated on topics like financial literacy, goal planning, and personal development.

This Youth Summit includes 2-days of workshops (4 in total) two workshops on Tuesday June 23 and two workshops Wednesday June 24. You can sign up for the Morning Session from 11AM to 1PM or the Evening Session from 4PM to 6PM.
