My #COVID #Update for December 9, 2020 for #Ward24 #Scarborough, and #Toronto

December 9, 2020

Dear Neighbours,

I want to thank everyone for their efforts during these difficult times. Let us all remember COVID-19 will hopefully be stopped, but we all must continue to keep following the mandated rules. We also need to remember, our mental health is paramount, and it is important we take care of ourselves and seek support if needed. For information on COVID-19 community supports please visit this link.

Toronto is in the Grey-Lockdown level of restrictions in the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework – From November 23 to December 21. Please stay home as much as possible, except for essential trips for groceries, healthcare, childcare, school and work. Remember to practicephysical distancing, washing your hands as often as possible and wear a mask or face covering. Residents are asked to limit contact with people not in the same household and to remain at home when ill.

To help residents understand the new Grey-Lockdown category measures, the City has created a simple Do and Don’t guide. This guide communicates what is – and what is not – permitted under the province’s lockdown stage, to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Health Canada authorizes first COVID-19 vaccine. Health Canada received Pfizer’s submission on October 9, 2020 and after a thorough, independent of the evidence, Health Canada has determined that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine meets the Departments stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements for use in Canada. More information can be read in this news release.

City of Toronto COVID-19 Case Update: (Data as of December 8, 2020) There has been an increase of 553 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. There are 220 people currently hospitalized. Through the pandemic the City of Toronto has seen a total of 46,619 cases of COVID-19, of these, 39,584 cases have recovered. To this date, there have been 1,684 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 12 fatal case since the day before. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform. Province of Ontario status of COVID-19 Cases can be found here.

Toronto Public Health has now added per cent positivity of COVID-19 by age group to the reporting platform. Per cent positivity measures the proportion of individuals testing positive for COVID-19 out of the total number who have been tested. In this data, per cent positivity is highest in the category of young people aged 14 to 17 – 11.6 per cent for the week of November 22. That is more than two per cent higher than the per cent positivity for the next highest group, 18- to 23-year-olds, at 9 per cent positivity.

Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from the flu. It is especially important this year to help protect our healthcare system during the fight against COVID-19.  Learn more about the flu online at www.toronto.ca/flu and book your flu shot appointment at www.tphbookings.ca

As the holidays are fast approaching, I’d like to remind everyone to practice public health advice on how to protect yourself and loved ones this holiday season. General advice to consider when planning your holiday season include virtual holiday events, outdoor holiday activities, decorating your homes and if possible, donating to holiday charities or toy drives. Residents are encouraged to show support for local businesses and Toronto retailers by shopping online and arranging delivery or curbside pickup.

The City of Toronto continues to work with community-based agencies to provide mental health support to vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City of Toronto wants all residents to know it is OK to not be OK and ask for mental health support. Toronto residents are reminded that they have access to free mental health services from the safety of their own homes. Anyone experiencing anxiety or stress can call 211 to connect with one of 13 mental health service partners for direct phone support. Mental health service information is also available at www.211.ca

Staying active is another way people can contribute to maintaining their mental health and wellbeing. The City and Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health continue to encourage people to safely get fresh air and exercise outdoors. People can stay active this winter with members of their household at city parks and outdoor spaces. Check out the City’s Welcome T.O. Winter parks plan for more information.

Torontonians are encouraged to show support for local businesses, urging all residents, who are able to, to participate in “Take Out Wednesday.” Ordering take-out or delivery supports local restaurants that have shifted their businesses and are working to help stop the spread of COVID-19. You can visit www.togotoronto.com to connect with restaurants around the city.

Today is Day 8 of 12 Days of Giving in the City of Toronto. Help those experiencing homelessness by donating personal hygiene products to a city-funded agency. City of Toronto COVID-19 Case Update: (Data as of December 2, 2020) There has been an increase of 421 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. There are 240 people currently hospitalized. Through the pandemic the City of Toronto has seen a total of 43,112 cases of COVID-19, of these, 36,618 cases have recovered. To this date, there have been 1,630 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto, an increase of 10 fatal cases since the day before. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform. Province of Ontario status of COVID-19 Cases can be found here.

Getting a flu shot is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from the flu. It is especially important this year to help protect our healthcare system during the fight against COVID-19.  Learn more about the flu online at www.toronto.ca/flu and book your flu shot appointment at www.tphbookings.ca

A City of Toronto report providing an update on the Eglinton East Light Rail Transit and the Waterfront Transit Network will be going to Executive Committee next week. The Eglinton East LRT is a planned 15km extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT from Kennedy Station to Malvern, with up to 21 stops and three connections to GO Transit. City staff recommend that City Council approve an updated project scope with an evolved design that accommodates the Province of Ontario’s subway expansion plans.

Transit is an important part of thriving, desirable neighbourhoods. The Eglinton East LRT will have many benefits, including serving Neighbourhood Improvement Areas and making important connections to other transit services. I am very happy with the work done to date on project and support this important future component of Scarborough’s transit network. More information can be read in the news release.

A City of Toronto staff report recommending a tax on vacant homes in Toronto will be going to Executive Committee next week. A vacant home tax increases the housing supply by encouraging homeowners to sell or rent their unoccupied home, and if they choose to continue to keep the home vacant, a tax is levied. This revenue can then be used to fund affordable housing projects.

Using data from Vancouver’s implementation of a vacant home tax as an example, if one per cent of Toronto’s housing stock is vacant, at a tax rate of one per cent on the average Toronto home’s current assessed value, this could equal $55 to $66 million in tax revenue per year. More information can be read in the news release.

St. Lawrence Market Saturday Farmers Market to resume full operations this Saturday so it can provide essential food retail to residents. The City of Toronto has reviewed the Province of Ontario’s COVID-19 response framework for areas in Grey – Lockdown as it applies to the Saturday-only Farmers Market. The Farmers Market has long been a weekly aspect of the permanent indoor St. Lawrence Market, which is permitted to be open under the regulations as it is essential food retail. This allows the Saturday Farmers Market to operate indoors with COVID-19 precautions in place. The Farmers Market will be open from 5am to 3pm on Saturday. More information can be read in the news release.

The City of Toronto continues to take extraordinary steps to help and protect people experiencing homelessness during COVID-19. So far in 2020, the City has also referred more than 2,500 people experiencing homelessness into permanent housing through a combination of housing allowances and rent-geared-to-income units, representing a 50 per cent increase over the same period last year. There are more than 6,000 shelter spaces in the city today. November 18, 2020

We also need to remember, our mental health is paramount, and it is important we take care of ourselves and seek support if needed.

The Ontario government has updated the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework by lowering the threshold of each level. Toronto Public Health is now in the Red-Control level with specific enhanced measures. The City of Toronto currently has the most restrictions in the province to slow the spread of COVID-19. As public health measures are put in place, the most effective limits are the ones we set for ourselves, please think of your limits, what they mean for you and the people around you. Please remember to practice physical distancing, washing your  hands as often as possible and  wear a mask or face covering. Please consider only leaving home for essential activities such as work, education and fresh air and exercise. Residents are asked to limit contact with people not in the same household and to remain at home when ill.

Today, Dr. de Villa presented the latest percent positivity for the City of Toronto at 6.2%, which is well above the 3% critical threshold. Dr. de Villa also reports noticeably higher percent positivity for teenagers, ages 14-17, at 7.5% and young people, ages 18-23, at 8.2%. In response to the increasing test positivity rates, Mayor Tory asks parents to remind children to come straight home after school and avoid time at friend’s homes whenever possible. Mayor Tory also asks employers to practice all infection protection and control measures possible and encourage COVID-19 testing in employees with supports for those who test positive. Guidance for employers is available online.

City of Toronto COVID-19 Case Update: (Data as of November 17, 2020) There has been an increase of 445 COVID-19 cases in the City of Toronto. There are 191 people currently hospitalized. Yesterday, Dr. de Villa provided an update on the impacts of public health measures. Following the implementation of modified Stage 2 measures, certain neighbourhoods with alarmingly heightened case rates – particularly where there is a high density of bars and restaurants – saw case rates per 100,000 population drop.

Toronto Public Health has now partnered with York University to further study if public health measures are yielding desired results. A transmission dynamics model has been developed for COVID-19 that shows how different public health measures have impacted the average number of contacts between people. Researchers found the average number of person-to-person contact was reduced from seven during the period following Stage 3 reopening, to less than five after reverting to a modified Stage 2. This decline in combination with other measures for self-protection, has the potential to lower COVID-19 case counts. For more information please read the news release.

My #COVID #Update for #Ward24 #Scarborough & #Toronto for November 16, 2020

November 16, 2020

Dear Neighbours,

I want to thank everyone for their efforts during these difficult times. Let us all remember COVID-19 will hopefully be stopped, but we all must continue to keep following the mandated rules. We also need to remember, our mental health is paramount, and it is important we take care of ourselves and seek support if needed. Everyone must practicephysical distancing, washing your  hands as often as possible and  wear a mask or face covering. Please consider only leaving home for essential activities such as work, education and fresh air and exercise. Residents are asked to limit contact with people not in the same household and to remain at home when ill.

In response to the rapid increase of COVID-19 cases, the Ontario government updated the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework by lowering the threshold of each level. Toronto Public Health is now in the Red-Control level with additional specific enhanced measures. Please read the Province’s Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework for the full list of public health region classifications and guidelines. Information on the City of Toronto specific enhanced measures can be found here.

As Toronto is now in the Red-Control level under the provincial COVID-19 Response Framework, religious services, funeral/celebration of life receptions and weddings must comply with the Reopening Act and the City of Toronto specific enhanced measures. During this time, it is recommended that faith leaders limit in-person services to keep everyone safe and to keep mindful of the gathering limits: of 30% of room capacity, to a maximum of 50 people in the building for indoor religious services; and 100 people or less for outdoor religious services. More information on guidance for places of worship can be found here. Details and checklists for planning a funeral reception or celebration of life and planning a wedding can be found online.
