Dear Neighbours,

The City of Toronto is now in Step Three of the province’s Roadmap to Reopen plan. Step Three permits Toronto residents to gather indoors, eat indoors at bars and restaurants and resume going to gyms and recreation centres. Please review the City’s COVID-19 Reopening Guide for Toronto Residents for a list of activities that are permitted in Step Three.

July’s City Council meeting tackled a few big items including renaming Dundas Street, approving SafeTO, a community safety and well-being plan and the TransformTO Net Zero Building strategy. Items closer home include the request I put forward for extra supports to address the European Gypsy (LDD) Moth infestation in the Seven Oaks Community.

I presented this request at this month’s Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting where it was amended to expand supports across the City for communities experiencing impacts by the LDD moth infestations. This request was successfully adopted at last week’s City Council meeting, where City Staff have been asked to provide additional supports including providing residents with information as well as holding public meetings for impacted communities.

For several years now, residents have contacted my office to report concerns regarding LDD Moth infestations throughout their community, with a significant number of inquiries from the Seven Oaks area. LDD Moths consume the regeneration tissues of trees causing them to expire. With the alarming growth of LDD Moths in the community, it is time for the City to take further action to protect the natural canopy and community members.

City staff is continuing to ask residents to report sightings of LDD moths/caterpillars via the city’s online reporting tool available at www.toronto.ca/gypsymoth or by calling 311. Homeowners can drop a point on the interactive map where they are seeing the caterpillars and report the volume they are seeing.

Today, flags on official flagpoles at Toronto City Hall and Civic Centres will be flown at half-mast in respect for the 160 unmarked graves discovered near a former residential school on Penelakut Island in British Columbia and those that did not return from these schools. Reminders for when booking your second dose: A “mixed mRNA model” – mixing Pfizer and Moderna for first and second dose – is approved by both the federal and provincial governments.The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are incredibly similar with near identical efficacy rates. Both vaccines have similar side effects. People are encouraged to get whichever vaccine is easiest or fastest for them to access.

Additionally, if you received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine you can choose to either receive a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, or an mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) vaccine for your second dose. Both second-dose options are safe and provide strong protection against COVID-19 and will count as a completed series. More details are available here.

*NEW* Starting today, youth aged 12-17 across Ontario are eligible for accelerated second dose appointments – News Release.  As the province moves to Step Two of its Roadmap to Reopen, Ontario is accelerating second dose eligibility to all children and youth aged 12 to 17 to provide them with a strong level of protection against COVID-19, including the Delta variant, and support a safe return to school in September. Eligible individuals can book an accelerated second dose appointment through the provincial booking system, directly through public health units and through participating pharmacies.

*NEW* More than fifty per cent of Toronto adults are now fully vaccinated – News Release. As of today, 77.5 per cent of adults have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and more than 50 per cent are fully vaccinated. In total, 1,404,614 Toronto residents are now fully vaccinated.

*NEW* More than 44,000 appointments available for City of Toronto immunization clinics this week – News Release. Everyone age 12 and older is eligible to book a first dose or an accelerated second dose. People with a scheduled second dose appointment later in the summer should reschedule for as soon as possible to ensure they are protecting themselves and the wider community against the Delta variant. 

*NEW* City opens eight Emergency Cooling Centres during Heat Warning – News Release. The eight Emergency Cooling Centres across the city will offer a publicly accessible, air-conditioned place to rest indoors and receive a drink. One of the eight cooling centres is located at the Scarborough Civic Centre, 150 Borough Dr, and will operate from 11 am to 7pm during Heat Warnings. This interactive map is available to help those who need to locate an Emergency Cooling Centre near them.

The City of Toronto encourages residents to reflect on reconciliation this Canada Day. On Thursday, July 1, the Toronto Sign will be lit in orange in solidarity with Indigenous communities across Canada. Flags on official flag poles at Toronto City Hall will also be flown at half-mast as people across Canada continue to honour the Indigenous children whose lives were taken, and as Canadians reflect on the tragedy of residential schools. 

The City of Toronto encourages people to learn more about Canada’s history and relationship with Indigenous communities and to consider how they can help advance truth and reconciliation in their own life and work. Residential school survivors who need support may call the Indian Residential Schools Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.

I would also like to remind residents of firework rules in Toronto. Fireworks are banned in parks and beaches and can only be set off on your own property without a permit on Victoria Day and Canada Day. Today, the Province of Ontario and Metrolinx introduced a pilot project which will provide GO Transit Bus Service directly to the Toronto Zoo on weekends and holidays this summer! I am happy to see this pilot bring direct transit access to the Toronto Zoo. Its an exciting opportunity for more people to experience the Toronto Zoo exhibits, Wildlife Health Centre, walking trails and much more. Learn more about the pilot project in this news release.

I would like to thank everyone who tuned into last night’s Scarborough-Guildwood Live Town Hall meeting! I would also like to thank my colleagues, Mitzie Hunter MPP, Hon. John McKay MP, and our special guest Dr. Jeffrey Schiffer, Executive Director of Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, for a very informative discussion about residential schools and the history and culture of Indigenous peoples. If you missed the live event, the full meeting is now live on my YouTube channel!

The City of Toronto will move into Step Two of the Province of Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopen as of tomorrow, June 30 at 12:01am. The City has readied reopening amenities and is prepared to resume permitted services starting tomorrow morning. In Step Two, additional restrictions put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19 are being lifted. Small indoor gatherings of up to five people from different households are permitted and outdoor gathering limits increase to 25 people.

I would like to encourage residents to review the City’s COVID-19 Reopening Guide for Toronto Residents for the latest public health guidance, provincial regulations, and City bylaws. A full list of Step Two changes can be found on the Province’s Reopening Ontario  webpage.

With Canada Day coming up, I would like to remind residents of firework rules in Toronto and that the City’s bylaw enforcement officers and Toronto Police Service will continue to monitor heavily used parks and beaches and respond to issues related to fireworks. Fireworks are banned in parks and beaches and can only be set off on your own property without a permit on Victoria Day and Canada Day. Gypsy Moth Update. Urban Forestry has completed planned treatments across the city to address the gypsy moth infestations, work includes egg mass removals from selected City-owned trees as well as pesticide injections and ground spraying in the parks. Dear Neighbours,

This week has been a devastating time for the Scarborough Muslim community as we mourn the loss of Brother Saleh Hafejee, a trailblazer for the Muslim community in Scarborough and especially in the Markham and Lawrence area. Brother Saleh has devoted 25 years of service to the Scarborough Muslim Association – Jame Abu Bakr Siddique. As an integral member of the Markham and Lawrence community, he was able to touch the lives of all residents alike, from youth to elders, where he was able to observe youth flourish into active residents in the community. I have worked closely with Brother Saleh over the years and have witnessed his dedication and passion for his community.

I pray that the many happy memories of Brother Saleh’s life be with you and with time, overcome the sadness and pain that has accompanied you all. Please read my letter to the Scarborough Muslim Association here.

Brother Saleh recognized the lack of sports programming in the Markham and Lawrence community, he took it upon himself to create a hockey league giving the youth in the community a safe space to play together and grow. He worked tirelessly to support the local youth and ensure that they had opportunities to flourish.

While we loved Brother Saleh dearly, whatever God takes away or gives belongs to Him. Everything has a fixed term in this world, so we must be patient and content. I hope that you can find solace in the truth of faith in this difficult time.
