{"id":477,"date":"2019-10-11T10:43:10","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T15:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/?p=477"},"modified":"2019-10-11T13:35:09","modified_gmt":"2019-10-11T18:35:09","slug":"october-highlights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/11\/october-highlights\/","title":{"rendered":"October Highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear Ward 24 Residents,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 10<sup>th<\/sup> City\nCouncil meeting was held over October 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 2019.\nAt this meeting items were adopted in numerous categories such as climate and\nenvironment, road safety, housing, licensing and standards, and diversity,\nsocial and health issues and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the declaration of climate\nemergency, Council voted to declare this state and adopt a stronger target for\nemission reductions aiming for net zero emissions for Toronto by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Council supported a\nmotion calling on Transportation Services to work with two contracted vendors\nto provide crossing guard services at 704 locations. The School Crossing Guard\nprogram plays an essential role in safeguarding communities across Toronto.\nCrossing guards maintain the safety and wellbeing of schoolchildren as they\nwalk to and from their schools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m happy to inform that City\nCouncil supported my recommendation to immediately cease the issuing of new\nlicenses to payday-loan establishments in Toronto. These outlets are now\nrequired to give their customers information about credit counselling services\nto help manage their financial situations to avoid cash shortfalls and cyclical\ndebt. Council also voted to prohibit payday-loan establishments, pawnshops and\ncash-for-gold vendors from advertising on City property. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016 the City&#8217;s Open Door\nProgram was approved to support the City&#8217;s efforts to deliver new affordable\nhomes and help meet housing targets. At this time City Council authorized City\nfunding to facilitate the creation of the 651 affordable rental homes in eight\nnon-profit and private sector developments across Toronto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council has approved a motion\nrequesting the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) board to explore discounted\npost-secondary fares taking into account the provincial government changes to\npost-secondary fee system. The TTC will be asked to report on this matter\nduring the City&#8217;s 2020 budget process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of a gender\nequity strategy for the city was directed by City Council along with the\nsupport for establishing a gender equity unit within People and Equity at the\nCity. Creating this unit will provide dedicated resources to ensure the\ncreation of a robust strategy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full details on the October 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\nand 3<sup>rd<\/sup> City Council meeting can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/app.toronto.ca\/tmmis\/viewPublishedReport.do?function=getCouncilAgendaReport&amp;meetingId=15356\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 5<sup>th<\/sup>\nToronto explored the 14<sup>th<\/sup> edition of Nuit Blanche in downtown\nToronto and Scarborough. There were nearly 90 projects from 300 artists, which\nincluded performance art, interactive installations, sculptures and mixed\nmedia. Eight projects remain on display including Ephemeral Artifacts at\nScarborough Town Centre and Scarborough Royalty in Albert Campbell Square.
