{"id":360,"date":"2019-02-22T17:10:39","date_gmt":"2019-02-22T17:10:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordsfromeasterntoronto.wordpress.com\/?p=360"},"modified":"2019-02-22T17:10:39","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T17:10:39","slug":"housing-now-in-the-city-of-toronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/2019\/02\/22\/housing-now-in-the-city-of-toronto\/","title":{"rendered":"Housing Now in the City of Toronto"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear Ward 24 Neighbours, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the January 30<sup>th<\/sup> City Council Meeting, Mayor John Tory&#8217;s\nfirst item of business of implementing the &#8220;Housing Now&#8221; initiative was\napproved increasing the supply of new affordable rental housing within\nmixed-income communities by making municipally-owned properties available to\nnon-profit and private organizations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/city-hall-2.jpg?w=620\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/city-hall-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/city-hall-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Housing Now Initiative represents a new city-building approach to the disposition of City-owned lands. In December 2018, City Council approved this initiative to activate 11 City-owned sites (the 11 Properties) for the development of affordable housing within mixed-income, mixed-use and transit-oriented communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first phase of this initiative included the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Activating the 11 Properties for the potential to create approximately 10,000 new residential units.<\/li><li>A proposed minimum of 2\/3 of all residential units created on the 11 Properties will be purpose-built rental housing with at least 50 % of the rental units as affordable rental housing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This phase is in addition to provide affordable rental homes in\npartnership between non-City sites with non-profit and private housing\norganizations through the 2019 Open Door Call for Affordable Rental Housing Applications.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the next phase provides: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>City staff and CreateTO will undertake\nmore detailed due diligence for each of the 11 Properties.<\/li><li>Report to the CreateTO Board of\nDirectors on directions and impacts prior to marketing. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/paulainslie.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/highrise.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the absence of this Housing Now Initiative, the 11 Properties would be sold at market prices mainly resulting in the development of market condominiums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recognition of the urgency to provide affordable rental housing in our city, this initiative sets action to create much needed affordable rental housing in mixed-income communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See these links for complete meeting <a href=\"http:\/\/app.toronto.ca\/tmmis\/decisionBodyProfile.do?function=doPrepare&amp;decisionBodyId=1862#Meeting-2019.CC2\">agenda<\/a>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toronto.ca\/home\/media-room\/news-releases-media-advisories\/?nrkey=9D5139069E51DE878525839200769703\">news\nrelease<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Council and other City of Toronto Committees can be watched live here at this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCfe2rzOnQzgEDvNzRRPUJsA\">link.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All my best, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Ward 24 Neighbours, At the January 30th City Council Meeting, Mayor John Tory&#8217;s first item of business of implementing the &#8220;Housing Now&#8221; initiative was approved increasing the supply of new affordable rental housing within mixed-income communities by making municipally-owned properties available to non-profit and private organizations.
